Nancy Pelosi Promises To Censor Conservative Talk Radio!July 1, 2008 – Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has openly promised to bring back the so-called “Fairness Doctrine” during the next session of Congress.
Pelosi made this admission at a breakfast
hosted by the Christian Science Monitor on June 24, 2008.
When asked if she would permit Rep. Mike Pence’s Broadcaster Freedom Act, H.R. 2905, to be voted on this session, she said no. The Broadcaster Freedom Act will ban the FCC from ever reinstituting the Fairness Doctrine. When asked if she would bring back the Fairness Doctrine, she replied “Yes” and said that Rep. Louise Slaughter “has been active behind this [revival of the Fairness Doctrine] for a while now.”
The Fairness Doctrine is an old FCC rule that was put into place by liberals during the Kennedy/Johnson years. It was presented to the public as a way of providing “fairness” in coverage of controversial issues. It required that “both sides” of an issue be aired. This usually meant that liberals got free air time to air their responses, while conservatives had to pay for airtime. Liberals have recently openly admitted that the
real purpose of the Fairness Doctrine was to drive conservative and Christian talk radio shows off the air. Few broadcasters wanted to be forced to air free liberal responses or risk losing their FCC licenses if they weren’t considered “fair.”
TVC’s Fairness Doctrine report provides a history of why the doctrine was created and how it will impact conservative and Christian talk radio if reinstituted by the FCC. The purpose is clearly to destroy alternative viewpoints on radio and TV because conservative talk radio has been so successful. Liberals can’t stand to have other viewpoints expressed on radio or TV. They want only one view expressed – that of liberal progressivism.
